May 11, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

Over the past year the fashion industry has been going through some major discussions about the relevancy and impact of Fashion Week. Menswear That Hit the Runways at Women's Fashion Week

Mar 14, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

Dual collections and androgynous looks are taking over Fashion Week, which means that there’s no longer a clear, concrete distinction between men’s and women’s collections. In the past, Men’s Fashion Week has its fair share of womenswear sprinkled throughout (most of which is usually influenced by menswear), but menswear popping up at the ladies’ shows? That has been pretty rare—until now.

Marimekko Showcases Wearable and Sophisticated Prints

Mar 10, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

If Finnish house Marimekko is known for anything it’s their eccentric prints. The sophomore collection from Creative Director Anna Teurnell followed this formula to the letter, as she sent big patterns on cuddly outerwear down the runway. “The Fall/Winter 2016 collection is an ode to originality and empowered women. Marimekko is about appreciating the imperfection and personality—being true to oneself,” Teurnell said of the lineup.

The designs however, were much less sportswear and instead tapped the traditional garments of the Swiss and Germanic region for inspiration.

Lagerfeld Focuses on Detail for Chanel's Fall Collection

Mar 8, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

Karl Lagerfeld is known for putting on a theatrical presentation every season, which is probably why the Chanel Fall 2016 runway felt so surprising—or perhaps more appropriately—like a breath of fresh air. Instead of an airport, casino, supermarket or the like, the Grand Palais was simply decorated with white floors, golden chairs and only one row along the catwalk. Yep, everyone invited to the Chanel show had a front row seat.

Iris Van Herpen Dreams in Abstract Shapes

Mar 8, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

Known for her abstract designs, Iris Van Herpen showcased her Fall 2016 collection, Lucid, with a runway show and art installation piece. Models walked around a dark room moving through a series of glass panels that distorted their image like a carnival hall of mirrors. The dresses, which were already extremely architectural and otherworldly in design, looked even more unearthly through their magnified reflections. We can’t say we’ve had any lucid dreams quite like it.

From Runway to Retail: How the Catwalk is Translated to Your Closet

Mar 7, 2016  |   Contributor: Marissa Stempien

We love fashion for fashion’s sake. Avant garde designs, exotic textiles and embellishments, and over-the-top structure all catches our eye and sparks our imagination. Which is great on the runway, but not so stellar once it finally reaches our closet. Somewhere between runway and retail, designers have to find what will work, what won’t and how they can translate the creativity and drama of the catwalk into a palpable, wearable collection.
